After eighty-nine years, the revue operetta Ball im Savoy – the most famous work by the Hungarian composer Paul Abraham, the king of jazz operetta in the 1930s, has returned to the State Opera as part of the Musica non grata project! The music of Ball im Savoy, depicting a crazy story abounding in witty conspiracies, mistaken identities and amorous sparkle, blends jazz, czardas, tango, Viennese waltz, klezmer, as well as dance creations à la Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. The performance is conducted by Jan Kučera and directed by Alfréd Radok Award winner Martin Čičvák. The choreography has been done by the tandem Laco Cmorej and Silvia Beláková and the costumes in the haute-couture style were designed for this production by the Greek-French designer Georges Vafias. In the leading roles can you see many well-known stars of the National Theater.

Press Echoes

  • bachtrack.com: [...] Which director Martin Čičvák delivers to the point of exhaustion, showcasing nonstop, high-energy period choreography [...] That’s in keeping with the overall pace set by Čičvák, which owes a lot to Hollywood musicals and screwball comedies of the ’30s and ’40s. It’s also a perfect match for the snappy patter and witty asides [...] read a review
  • Süddeutsche Zeitung: „Neben dem Opernballett glänzen die Gesangssolisten Doubravka Součková, Jiří Hájek, Barbora Řeřichová, Daniel Matoušek, Linda Caridad Fernandez Saez und Vladimir Kratina in den Hauptrollen.“ read a review
