After 101 years, Sancta Susanna by Paul Hindemith returns to the stage of the State Opera

101 years after its Czech premiere at the New German Theatre in 1923, Paul Hindemith's one-act opera Sancta Susanna will return to the stage of the State Opera in a concert performance on Saturday, 6th April. In the second half of the concert, the opera Eine Florentinische Tragödie by Alexander Zemlinsky will be performed. Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience two seminal operatic works of the first half of the 20th century. Both are their authors’ take on a love story, both are erotically seductive, and both were scandalous in one way or another in their times. The performance starts at the State Opera at 7 p.m. on Saturday 6th April. The evening will include a dramaturgical introduction by a leading Zemlinsky scholars of our time, the musicologist and conductor Antony Beaumont. The introduction will be in English.

Dive deeper into the world of these two beautiful operas by reading an interview with the conductor Karsten Januschke, who will conduct the performances at the State Opera on 6th April. What do the works have to do with Alma Mahler? In what ways are they similar to each other and in what are they different? And why you should not miss this unique performance? Read the interview
